Mill-Max Manufacturing Corp. Inc. has developed the Omniball spring-loaded contact, a patent-pending connector technology that uses a gold-plated brass ball as the contact interface instead of the plunger found in conventional pogo pins. The design is intended to improve electrical and mechanical performance in connectors subject to rotation, sliding or angular misalignment.
The central feature is a rolling-ball interface. When the contact engages, the ball can accept axial compression while maintaining contact under lateral, rotational and angular alignment. This rolling action is designed to reduce binding, premature wear and structural failure that can affect traditional plunger-style spring pins in non-perpendicular movement.
Mill-Max has expanded the Omniball line to include surface-mount, through-hole and solder-cup termination options. The through-hole variants differ primarily in tail length, while the solder-cup model supports wire up to 20 AWG.
| Part number | Type | Key specification |
|---|---|---|
| 7945-1-15-20-09-14-11-0 | Through-hole | Tail length 0.079 inch (2 mm) |
| 7945-2-15-20-09-14-11-0 | Through-hole | Tail length 0.118 inch (3 mm) |
| 7949-0-15-20-09-14-11-0 | Solder-cup | Supports wire up to 20 AWG |
The through-hole models are differentiated by tail length, while the solder-cup version is intended for wire-to-board connections and includes press-fit features for mounting.
Omniball contacts are designed for durability and stable electrical performance under extreme test conditions, according to the company’s specifications.
Because of its sliding and rotational compatibility, the Omniball contact is suited to connector environments that require movement or alignment tolerance during mating.
